Museum Seeks Historic Maps for Growing Digital Archive
The Sault Ste. Marie Museum is asking residents to help preserve local history by contributing historic maps to its growing RECAP database.
Project lead Mitchell Harris says the initiative began as a way to track the evolution of local neighbourhoods, but has grown into a mission to collect every map of Sault Ste. Marie that researchers can find. The database allows historians, researchers and community members to explore how the city developed over time and uncover stories that may still be waiting to be told.
Harris says maps offer more than geographic information, providing insight into what past generations valued and how the community evolved.
